Abstract

South Korea stands in Asia Pacific as an emerging power with growing international influence. Partially moving away from the almost exclusive focus on its relationship with the United States as a filter of its external projection, Seoul began to redefine its global and regional foreign policy from a middle power perspective. This process had profound repercussions on the reconfiguration of Seoul's multilateral diplomacy and regional governance, bringing the State closer to regional integration processes, among which ASEAN stands out. In this paper we analyze the characteristics of South Korea's foreign policy towards ASEAN from 1989 to the present, with special emphasis on the strategic and economic dimensions. From this analysis we try to contribute to the study on the differentiation between middle and regional powers, through the distinction of Korean foreign policy at the international level and its role as regional actor.
