Abstract

The interregional dialogue between Africa and South America has been characterized by moments of high interactions and others of distance. Since 2006, a new period of intensification of this South-South dialogue has begun through the creation of ASA Forum (South America and Africa) and the revitalization of the Zone of Peace and Cooperation in the South Atlantic (ZOPACAS) in 2007, promoted by Brazil. This paper aims to analyze the strategic use and relevance of these interregional Afro-South American fora regarding Brazil’s external policy, and its international insertion strategy during the period between 2006 and 2013, year of the last Summit of ASA in Malabo. It is argued that the dynamism of the interregional dialogue between the two sides of the South Atlantic offers new spaces of action through which Brazil has exercised a leadership to both promote its own interests and to foster an ideational diffusion through its rhetoric action.
