Abstract

The article analyzes the foreign policy of Javier Milei’s government through the lens of national role theory, focusing on his attempt to project Argentina as a defender of Western civilization. The study conceptualizes this strategy within the framework of "civilizational populism," through which Milei constructs a narrative of the West based on three dimensions: economic, cultural, and religious. As a hypothesis, it argues that the international role Milei seeks for Argentina is not acknowledged by key external figures -Donald Trump, Giorgia Meloni, and Benjamin Netanyahu- resulting in what is known as a role conflict. To test this hypothesis, the study employs a qualitative-interpretative approach, combining content and discourse analysis with an examination of foreign policy decisions between December 2023 and June 2025.
